Mall to rise on school lots?
THE Jose Abad Santos High School and the Rajah Soliman High School is set to be relocated so the schoolgrounds could be sold to a wealthy Chinese-Filipino family that wants to build a mall in partnership with a powerful Manila politician, a reliable source told Standard Today yesterday.
The source refused to identify the Chinese-Filipino family but he said they own a building near the school property and the building will be interconnected with the mall once it is finished.
“Where in the world can you find a government out to tear down a historic edifice only to replace it with a mall-cum-call center? Only in Manila,” said the source, who asked not to be identified for fear of reprisal.
But Mayor Lito Atienza told the students and teachers that the housing project will rise on the schoolgrounds and the two schools will be relocated to an area that will be “conducive for learning (and) a new and modern setting ideal for educational purposes.”
The mayor also said the new sprawling campus will include a language proficiency center, teachers’ dormitory, school shops and laboratory.
The current school-grounds measures some 2.5 hectares while the new schoolgrounds in San Nicolas is about 2.1 ha.
Students and teachers also complained that the Binondo property is accessible while the San Nicolas relocation area, which is near colonies of squatters’ families, is accessible only through the Sta. Cruz-Asuncion route.
The relocation of the two schools were allowed under two resolutions that were approved by the Manila city council during its regular session last Nov. 29.
The two resolutions, although not included in the agenda but sponsored in the floor by majority Councilors Letlet Zarcal and Cassy Sison, was opposed by minority Councilors Atong Asilo and Lissa Beltran-Ricohermoso.
The resolutions authorize Atienza to enter into an agreement to any reputable, established and financially stable corporation for the demolition and relocation of the two said public schools to a site/lot owned by the national government and currently being administered by the city government by virtue of Presidential Proclamation 925 which was signed by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo only last Oct. 4.
Meanwhile, Councilor Bernie Ang, the city council’s minority floorleader, belied earlier reports that he had joined the majority in endorsing the two resolutions.

in my opinion: this is by far the most ridiculous idea i've ever heard. i mean c'mon a mall over 2 schools combine? how many malls do these people need? it suddens me to know that these money hungry people could careless about the youth's education. yeah they're relocating a new school alright, but it wouldn't be the same as the good ol' j.a.s.h.s.. right?
of course, having a"mall" would benefit those who need jobs yet, these people should open up their eyes and look at there are still 3 malls nearby (the infamous tutuban mall , the dm mall & 678 mall? i hope i got it right) who aren't even fully functionable. they're are still alot of slots available and let's face it.. its a total dead end situation...
eventhough i only went to jashs for a year, i can definitely say that my experienced from it was one of those moments that i can look back and put a on my face..
